Oral Hygiene

Whether you’re well into your orthodontic treatment and have been wearing braces for awhile or have just gotten your braces put on, it’s always important to maintain excellent oral hygiene to ensure your orthodontic treatment is most effective. Dr. Tepper-Adler, your Bentleigh, Victoria orthodontist has some tips to help you practice healthy oral hygiene habits during your time wearing braces that can propel you to that amazing smile when those braces come off!

The Importance Of Good Oral Hygiene

Taking proper care of your teeth not only makes them look attractive, but it also prevents serious dental problems like gum disease and tooth decay. Taking really good care of your teeth with braces is often more difficult, so braces wearers are more prone to these dental issues than non-braces wearers. But we know that our Melbourne area patients will be successful in their oral hygiene routines with the following tips.

Brushing with Braces

While braces work wonders for your smile, they are notorious for trapping food particles. If left sitting in your braces, these food particles can cause bacteria to thrive in your mouth and wreak havoc on your teeth. Brushing often throughout the day, after every time you eat will help you to avoid accumulation of food particles in your teeth and braces.

You can also use an interdental toothbrush to clean underneath and around your archwires and brackets without damaging your orthodontic appliances.

Flossing with Braces

Flossing with braces can be a time-consuming and patience-testing challenge, but it is very important to floss daily to reach the spaces in between your teeth that brushing misses. To effectively floss with braces, use a floss threader to bring the floss under your archwire. Be careful around your archwire - do not floss too forcefully around it or put too much pressure on it. Make it part of your nightly routine to floss, so your teeth are clean before you go to bed.

More Care Tips for Braces

While brushing and flossing properly and often are the main ways to take care of your teeth while wearing braces, there are also a few other steps you can take to make sure you’re keeping your mouth as healthy as possible while you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.

  • Rinse with antibacterial mouthwash

A hydrogen peroxide antiseptic mouth rinse will help to kill germs in your mouth, prevent infection, decrease irritation that may develop from your braces, and reduce gum inflammation.

Up to four times a day (after brushing), rinse your mouth with two teaspoons of the rinse for one minute, and then spit it out.

  • Use fluoride

Using a sodium fluoride gel can help prevent tooth decay while you are wearing braces. The gel kills bacteria and replaces minerals in the tooth enamel that have been removed by harmful acids.

At bedtime, place a small strip of the gel on a toothbrush, and apply it to your teeth for one minute. Then spit it out. Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes afterward to allow the gel to work on your teeth.
