When it comes to orthodontics in and around the Melbourne area, Centre Orthodontics is proud to offer one of the widest ranges of orthodontic treatments you can possibly find. We recognize that all of our patients are unique, which is why we want to be able to provide a treatment that’s perfectly tailored for each individual. It’s common for some patients to be self-conscious and hesitate about getting braces for fear of how they’ll look. However, at Centre Orthodontics, that will never be a problem. We’re proud to offer two different types of orthodontic treatments that provide a discreet way to realign your teeth: lingual braces and Invisalign.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are braces that are placed behind the teeth as opposed to traditional braces which are placed on the front of teeth. These braces work in the same way as traditional braces while also allowing for a discreet treatment process, since brackets are hidden on the backside of teeth.

Pros of Lingual Braces

  • Lingual braces are essentially completely invisible to others because they’re placed behind the teeth.

  • When regular braces get stained or worn out, they can appear unattractive. This isn’t a problem with lingual braces since others won’t see them anyway.

  • Lingual braces come in many different designs and can be customized to a patient’s needs.

Cons of Lingual Braces

  • Speech is commonly affected for the first few weeks after lingual braces are put on.
  • Lingual braces can irritate the tongue.
  • It takes longer for lingual braces to be placed, cleaned, and adjusted.
  • Lingual braces don’t work as well in more complicated orthodontic cases.
  • Lingual braces are more expensive than other orthodontic treatments.

Invisalign uses advanced 3-D technology to help craft a series of clear aligners made of flexible plastic. Each set of aligners is meant to be worn over your teeth for a two-week period until the alignment process is complete.

Pros of Invisalign

  • Invisalign aligners are transparent, which means that you can wear them and others won’t even know that you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.

  • Because they’re not made of metal, Invisalign offers more comfort than both traditional braces and lingual braces.

  • Since you can remove your aligners, brushing and flossing is just as simple as ever.

  • You can eat whatever you like with Invisalign as long as you remember to remove your aligners beforehand.

Cons of Invisalign

  • You have to remember to keep the aligners in for at least 22 hours every day or they won’t work the way they were intended by your orthodontist.

  • It’s strongly recommended to brush your teeth after every time you eat or drink anything besides water. Not doing so may cause food particles or acidic drink remnants that are left behind to get pressed against your teeth by the aligners, which can lead to tooth decay.
